THE SPIRITUAL POWER OF MUSIC #6

The precise connection between the pitch of an instrument and the length of a string

has been attributed to Pythagoras. He stated that the pitch was inversely proportional

to the length of the string. He linked numerical ratios and the resulting tonality

that happened to the harmony of the stars, galaxies the 'spheres' and celestial sounds.

Furthermore he described astronomy and music as twinned studies of 

Sensual Recognition

Astronomy for the Eyes 

Music for the Ears 

all requiring numerical proportions. 

 Jimi Hendrix's was one of the most skilled guitarists of all time and also arguably

the grandfather of Heavy Metal.

Contrast his music with Beethoven's which could create a relaxed, parasympathetic

response rather that a sympathetic, agitated one.

Hendrix and others represent the dark side of music even at a somatic and cellular level.

There is a video on You Tube with him playing - expertly - his guitar with his teeth.

He looked possessed and I doubt it was from the forces of light.

The tritone, Diabolus in Musica has been called the Devil's interval. It was also used,

but only sparingly, with good effect by Beethoven, Wagner, Tartini,

and other composers. It was banned by the church who supported the great classical

composers.

However, it has become a predominant feature especially in Heavy Metal

and some other forms of modern music.

It creates a chilling, unsettling, foreboding, atmosphere which would not

conform to the listener's expectations. One hears the tritone or trill in spooky movie

soundtracks and the sounds around Halloween. 

Many modern musical legends have flirted implicitly or explicitly with the fact that 

"The Devil has the best tunes."

Little Richard, Elvis, Snoop Dog, Jagger, Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page, Black Sabbath,

Megadeth, California Quartet Slayer,

Black Metal the Red Hot Chili Peppers and others,

 David Bowie did so as well and stated, 

"Rock has always been the Devil's music and I feel we are heralding

even something even darker than ourselves." 

However Rock and especially Soft Rock can be anything but dark depending on the

intention of the musicians and avoidance of the tritone for negative and sexually

enhancing effects.

WORDS AND THE SUBCONSCIOUS

 Our thoughts are being recorded by our subconscious all the time and no matter

what we think we think with our conscious minds,

how we act will usually unfold according to what is in our subconscious.

Words also have even more power on the subconscious when added to music, be it

sacred or profane.

Rap can be light or dark depending on its vocabulary.

Matisyahu sings in Rap but uses biblical and spiritual messages.

The visuals associated in live performances or in video also have a huge impact.

Music can be accompanied by dramatic, sometimes violent visuals

for effect as when Jimi Hendrix smashed and burnt his guitar on stage.

It's not just the tone of the music but the words and visuals that send the message. 

Music is one of the most powerful influencers on the planet for good or bad

and can influence tens of thousands of devotees in a few hours.

These artists often express the shadow side and can draw others into it.

For our inner harmony we also need to be sure that essence is not sacrificed

on the altar of for the sake of mass appeal.

Often spectacular visual affects mask the fact

that the actual music is mediocre.

The soul's essence should lodge comfortably in the body.

From the sound of my sighing has my essence cleaved onto my flesh. 

When we are spiritually in balance and have inner peace and equanimity

the soul and the body are at one.

Behind your image, below your words, above your thoughts

the silence of another world awaits.

The right kind of music can enhance the power of our imaginative capacity.

It can facilitate imaginations intention in actualizing what we want.

"Music is the easiest method of meditation. Whoever can let himself dissolve

into music, has no need to seek anything else to dissolve into." Osho

Intend-Imagine-Believe-Achieve

What cannot be imagined cannot be fulfilled.

The wrong kind of music usually will not allow a positive active imaginary form of

meditation which can actualize our spiritual intent. The Ancestors stress that

imagination assisted by the right music can help us enter into a realm

of supreme possibilities - those of the light. It can also dispel dark forces.

"I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free." Michelangelo

Music can help or hinder our imaginative capabilities and heal or harm

our Soul or the Inner Healer which is part of it.

The right sound shatters resistances and barriers, including those to the mind

and the heart. It also clears dark forces both within and without.

Sound awakens the dormant and revels the hidden. It stirs the energies that

heal and glorify.

When we think of Pythagorus, his connection to the Music of the Spheres

and his

Sensual Recognition-Astronomy for the Eyes-Music for the Ears 

we need to be sure that not only our auditory,

but also our visual and somatic experiences are positively enhanced,

the musical notes have mathematical integrity and are concordant,

and our ears that send signals to our subconscious are finely tuned.
